Minimalist Makeup Collection

minimalist makeup collection ecco bella

My minimalist makeup collection now includes 11 products and 3 brushes, which are great for a handful of good looks you can wear for day or night. Around this time last year I had just thrown out all of my MAC makeup. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford to replace everything all at once though. Natural products tend to be a little more costly as these use more expensive ingredients. Now that I have acquired everything I wanted, an update of my collection is definitely in order!

I go for a more natural look. Jennifer L. Scott, author of Lessons from Madam Chic, refers to this as “le no makeup look.” Nevertheless, this collection still offers the flexibility to create a more dramatic eye so that you can take your look from day to night. I don’t wear lipstick, but you could definitely include some if that is your thing.

I have researched natural makeup a fair bit. I found a lot of the more popular brands that claim to be natural still had a lot of toxic ingredients. I haven’t found a brand yet that ticks all the boxes of being organic, zero-waste, and non-toxic but this one comes pretty close and I’ll explain why.

First, you can buy many of their products anywhere in the world with free or cheap shipping from

Secondly, Ecco Bella’s products are free of paraben, water, alcohol, talc, FD & C dyes, and any animal product (except carmine and beeswax in the cover up and a handful of their lip products). Their products also don’t contain any gluten or wheat protein. Furthermore, they use certified organic aloe vera instead of water. Ecco Bella is also cruelty free and founded their company based on those values. Please note: their mascara and natural foundation DO contain phenoxyethanol, a preservative also known as rose ether.

Third, they make an effort to reduce packaging. Their eye shadow and blush compacts are refillable. That means I can reorder only the colors I need and reuse the packaging. The eye shadow and blush are also the same size so it is easy to mix and match. Moreover, the packaging of these compacts is mostly made of paper. So that means a large percentage of it is compostable. You could even skip the packaging all together and just order refills. You could easily pop them in any container with a magnet lining. Not a completely zero-waste option, but I appreciate them keeping the environment in mind!
