I’M NOT A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER

We need to start thinking of organizing as a dirty word. It is a sneaky little profanity that keeps us from simplifying our lives. -The Minimalists

First things first, while my work does include organizing, organizing is actually a very small part of what I do. If you are looking to hire someone to sort all of your stuff into acrylic boxes from the container store, I’m sorry but I can’t help you. That just isn’t what I do.

In fact, I find that when my clients are completely honest about choosing which items spark joy and add value to their life, rarely is organization needed. The sheer reduction of superfulous items means there is usually plenty of space to keep your items in plain view. All that is left to do is arrange your items in a way that is functional, aesthetically pleasing and that sparks joy!

WHAT IS A KONMARI CONSULTANT?

You know how there is plenty of free information available online and in libraries on how to lose weight and get into shape? You would think there isn’t a need for personal trainers at all. In actuality though, transforming your body is no simple task. People hire a personal trainer not only for their expertise, but also accountably, encouragement, and support. At the end of the day, some people may just not want to embark on that journey alone.

Well, I am that person for decluttering and tidying your home. In most cases, it took years for us to collect all the items that weigh so heavily on our conscience and mind (I know because I’ve been there too). In fact, many people feel like they don’t know where to start. Just thinking about the countless hours it could take to completely simplfy their home can be overwhelming. Moreover, without the right techniques, many people also suffer from relapse, clearing a space only to find it even more cluttered one year later. When working with a KonMari consultant you not only gain their expertise, but also their passion for the process and their will to see you thriving in a home that sparks joy.

WHAT DOES A KONMARI CONSULTING SESSION LOOK LIKE?

A typical session is 5 hours. We work through categories in the specific order outlined by the KonMari method™: Clothing, Books, Papers, Komono (misc items), and Sentimentals. At the begininng of the session I usually take a few minutes to outline our task and strategy. I include relevant quotes and tips from Marie Kondo’s books as well as things I have learned during my training.

Next, we take everything in that category out and put it into a pile. Yes, everything. Yes, a pile. We begin the joy-check process where you pick up each item and decide if it sparks joy or not. Don’t worry, most clients develop their joy sensing skills very quickly with guidance from a consultant. When you aren’t sure, I’m there to ask questions until you are fully confident about keeping or discarding an item.

When this is done, we put only the items that spark joy back into the space. This is where my expertise will come in handy again. We’ll discuss all the options for arranging and storing the items and choose one that will be both easy to use AND inspiring to look at.  I’ll also be there to teach you any skills (folding for example) that are needed.

However, as I am still a KonMari consultant in training, I’m offering my sessions at a special pre-certification rate of ¥20,000 per session, plus the cost of my transportation.
